So this is a quick post this morning primarily motivated by the half wits running the City of Halifax. Again in the news is the story of another failed development bid for a project in the downtown core, with city councilors unable to approve anything but a lunch order.

The Waterside Centre looked great and maintained some of the historical characteristics that are so important to the city while creating much needed space and revitalization. However some people on the city council seem to favor a wrecking ball. Instead of approving the project the city will now lose the heritage it deems so important with the wrecking ball bound to swing soon.

So to elaborate on the title a little further … Essentially this city is self destructive. Instead of acting and being progressive, buildings will now be lost completely. Building owners will wait until they can get approval for demolition of unsafe structures and then what can be done? Nothing, the heritage will be gone and the developer will be free to build with limited restrictions.

So congrats, maybe a celebratory golf clap for the the mindless half wits in city council. Your failed leadership is turning Halifax into a Self Destructive City.

UPDATE:

Congrats to Rodney for having the ability to recognize and address an issue. This city needs revitalization and if its gotta be done this way then so be it. All of these whiney people that want the city to stay as is need to get out of their little world and see some other great cities. How about London, Dublin or Berlin? All great cities with a mixture of history and new developments. Time to wake up and get with the times.

In regards to peoples cries that the government shouldn’t be interferring with the city, give your head a shake. As said on Twitter “Province veto is part of the democratic process. Provinces create councils to manage cities, so they can overrule them too.”

The D250 Campaign, roughly a $9 Million spend by both federal and the NS Provincial Governments to get you to the polls? Seems that the campaign failed as the numbers were terrible this year. Maybe I missed something with the D250 campaign, What was the end goal?

Lets look at the numbers. In the most recent federal election a mere 59.1% of eligible Canadians turned out to vote and in the 2006 election 64.7% turned out to vote and judging by the numbers that election Canada publishes this is the worst election for voter turnout ever. And this past weekends Municipal elections don’t look to have fared any better, also recording a poor showing of voters.

So what was the purpose of this D250 campaign cause it sure wasn’t meant to inspire the young and the old to get out and vote? Given the lack of votes did D250 do the opposite and turn off voters? Or maybe no one got the message …

The election decline! This seems to be the common trend with elections over the last couple of decades, numbers are dropping and governments are left wondering why. Maybe it’s because our leaders have lost touch and no longer connect with the majority of the voting public, are they still target their baby boomer cliques while the younger voters are left to wander? Alternatively, maybe our elected officials fail to inspire and motivate anymore essentially leading to the voting public not caring.

$9 Million spent and we ended up with a poor showing at the polls. Have people just given up and don’t care anymore about the selection of the politicians that run our provinces, country and even cities?

Wasn’t really sure what to call this post, it is really just a round up of my hectic life lately and some other stuff thrown into the mix.

Where do I start? I have so much on the go and really not a lot at the same time. I guess I’ll start with addressing some comments I received recently regarding my blog. I’ve been told I need to be more positive, that I only address negative issues and it really isn’t good. Well… to answer that, oh well. I’m not here to give anyone false hopes or promises, or to mislead. I choose topics that annoy, entertain or are of interest to me. I blog about things people tell me, stuff I hear and what I read or see. So that is all on that subject.

On to things more interesting; We have launched the TechOpen website! This is set to be one of the best events going in this region this year! Great speakers, great venue and global participation. We are bringing in speakers like Chris Brogan, Mitch Joel and the CBC’s Jesse Brown. Day one will kick off with a great forum that looks like it will spark discussion, debate and action. Day two is rounded well with workshops presented by leading organizations from around Atlantic Canada. This is a must attend event so book now at the TechOpen website.

On the business side of things we have run into some delays with the public beta release of MediaBadger. Some issues presented themselves during our testing and we are working to sort them out. We are hoping to do the beta launch before August 2008.

Also in business I have been doing some system upgrades on TechEast to improve the stability and in preparation for the launch of some social media components. We are working to improve the users experience on the site and develop a well rounded location for Atlantic Technology companies collaborate, share and learn.

Something else I’m involved in is ITANS and while I have followed this organization closely for a number of years and have my own thoughts on the organization. What I’d like to know is: What do you think, what you’d like to see done and how can they improve? Email me and let me know what your thoughts are on ITANS (I won’t be publishing or sharing peoples emails).

Lastly on a personal note i will be in Toronto in August getting sworn in as a British Citizen. I will now hold dual citizenship and I am excited. If your in Toronto and want to meet up email me!
