A blog post that is a work in progress. Thoughts, Ramblings and Opinions on Googles Buzz. What are your thoughts and who will be next to enter the social fray?I had asked the question a few days ago “Google Buzz will it go anywhere” and thinking about it now, I think it will.

The Google Buzz has definitely created a buzz, and is acclaimed to be one of the smart moves by Google. Buzz is not a competitor to Twitter, Facebook or other social platforms, but rather a gateway, something to aggregate your social existence in one space and further share with the web.

Giving this some more thought, how many companies will start to take into consideration the business side of things, there’s more to it – Google Buzz and the inclusion into search results as Twitter is, can greatly affect ones presence on the net and how we do business. Google is the source for info, phone numbers, feedback, reviews etc … Buzz is going to add to the pile, further generate more info for people to take into consideration when determining a purchase or decision and affect or influence customers further.

Basically upon performing a search for businesses in Google Maps, you can find the “Buzz about this place” option. Now, this turns out to be more or less like a Facebook community or Twitter group for the specific business, as you have the choice to Buzz about a business you like or the one you don’t. Unlike Facebook and Twitter, Buzz has the ability to be seen by more people, the conversations are public and distributed by the most popular site on the net.

So, Google Buzz polls about a business will turn out to be much more than a review? Well, sure thing, you’ll enjoy the positive buzz about your business and increase in the business (if you’re lucky enough to get only positive Buzz). On the contrary, if you get lot of negative Buzz about your business or a particular product, you’ll have to essentially interact with the ‘dissatisfied customers’ and help them in resolving their issues as with any social channel.

Well then, it looks like Google is all set to pull more to the party, to participate in Social Media activities and engage them to keeping talking with the new Google Buzz! If you’re not too happy with the Buzz, then you can opt out (This option is based in the footer on Gmail). While I wouldn’t encourage opting out, if you are going to I would suggest you monitor it.

Prepare for the challenge and see how Buzz morphs over the coming months, where it appears and how it is used. The social web is growing, channels are appearing daily and the conversation will continue. Take part and enjoy.

I know its a late post, but I’ve been somewhat busy. Spent part of 2009 living in Nova Scotia and then bam finished off the year living in London as the CMO of a multi national pet dot com. Its been a crazy ride and one that continues to develop daily. I am looking forward to 2010, the work, the projects and the travel.

What’s on the go in 2010? Some projects will be coming out of the box and into the public domain for testing, and yes finally Mediabadger is one of them. Been a tough go with only one person doing development on the project, but that being said we have some great new partners that are helping us roll out the system. Stay tuned!

What else … The launch of a new advertising platform. And I’ll leave it at that for the time being.

TechEast continues to grow even though news from the region slowed to a trickle over the last few months. It is starting to pick up again and I’m looking into bringing a writer into the mix once again. Any suggestions do let me know. We are also working to get ATJ.ca back up and running and even better .

Well thats all and to summarize my 2009 in one word. HECTIC.

Its been a great ride and I’m looking forward to continuing it here (in London for the time being). If your around drop me an email or call and we can grab a coffee.

Back in London (the UK for those that were not aware) and have been going full on 16+ hours a day since taking on the CMO role at a fantastic start up (www.medicanimal.com). From meeting and socializing with Google in Dublin Ireland to meeting with some of the largest portals in the world, this role is a continuous challenge and one that I am enjoying.

In an extremely competitive environment, marketing pet care products and differentiating yourself is a bit of a challenge. That being said I am preparing to unveil some amazing partnerships I have been working on, that will effectively take this company to a whole new level. Keep an eye on the MedicAnimal site for things to come.

UI, PPC, Strategy, Partnerships and more … All in a days work and lately my days keep getting longer. If you happen to know a Internet Marketing Ninja let me know, the person should be based in London and needs to be a thinker and a doer (not just a doer).

So enough on that… No one wants to hear about Frontline, Hills Dog Food or Hamburger shaped beds (yes a Hamburger shaped bed).

In the six weeks that I have been here in London, living and working … I have been re energized. The business climate, the people and the lifestyle have caused me great enjoyment. The only problem … My wife is in Canada and I will not see her until I head back to Canada in December for Christmas. Short term issues that have to be dealt with I guess.

Oh and back to what I had originally titled the blog post “Social Media, Strategy, Cats and Dogs ….”. Actually when I originally thought of the title I didn’t take into consideration that I would become so easily distracted and stray from the original. This blog post has now turned into a Business/Random Rambling blog post. Guess I’ll have to do a Part 2 and actually focus on the subject … Till next time, which will be soon, a Social Media post!

This issue is becoming increasingly important to both large and small businesses. Certainly to governments and increasingly even to non-profit organizations. It can increase exposure when it hits the media, both positively and negatively. It can enhance or hurt your brand. A number of companies offer monitoring solutions though few help beyond monitoring with advice. It’s not just finding out the commentary, it’s knowing what to do with it. Here, we scratch the surface of this issue.

I’ve encountered reputation issues both positive and negative. I’ve also found both positive and negative commentaries across ALL industries and sectors. Even a plumbing supply company that suffered. Some companies have very positive coverage and end up with brand evangelists. So what can you do? How do you address this issue?

It’s important to note that most issues surrounding online reputation management fall out of social media sites on the Web (blogs, video blogs, YouTube, Facebook, Bebo, MySpace etc.) and rarely come from traditional media. PR agencies are well geared to deal with traditional media, but few understand how to work with social media, since the pshychology of people participating in social media applications takes a strange twist from the “real world.” My experience has shown that your marketing and communications people should be monitoring the Web and have a plan for response. Similar to how a company will have a Crisis Management plan in place for negative media coverage.

Dealing with negative information on the Web however, is a little more different. It is also more permanent in nature. A careful line has to be drawn with how much you push to manage the message. You can no longer control the message, but you can manage it. You should have a plan in place to have a response team or find an agency that has not just real-world PR experience, but Web communications experience and vice versa.

You can monitor yourself through tag cloud engines and by checking regular bloggers you know cover you, but a more effective route is to engage a company that has a software application to do broader and deeper searches. Make sure this company also has the ability to help you manage situations, otherwise you’ve only solved half the problem.

So I am following the current legal battle for Pirate Bay and it got me thinking, Why hasn’t the likes of Google or Yahoo been dragged into this mess yet?

For those of you who are unaware of what the Pirate Bay is, it is a search engine for torrents and basically BitTorrent is a peer to peer method for transferring large amounts of data.

Now somewhere along the lines governments, the recording industry, movie studios etc have taken great offense to these sort of torrent sites that facilitate the locating of files stored in various places on the internet. These numerous organizations have been battling to shut down sites like the Pirate Bay for quite sometime. However at some point one has to wonder why they are not targeting the likes of Google and Yahoo?

Doing a quick search on Google for “Body of Lies torrent” and hundreds of listings appear. Does this mean Google is providing the same service as Pirate Bay?It would seem that way.

The question is: What is the Pirate Bay doing that Google isn’t?
